Sheriff’s office investigating apparent stabbing of Mosinee police officer

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office has begun an investigation into an incident in which a Mosinee police officer was stabbed early Friday, officials say.

Police say a Mosinee police officer conducted a welfare check on a man lying on the sidewalk near 7th and Main streets around 2:16 am Friday. The 41-year-old man, who police have not named, stabbed the officer who then called for backup. The man didn’t comply with the responding officers, and he was ultimately subdued by a Marathon County Sheriff’s Office K9 officer, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The officer police say was involved in the incident was transported to a hospital and then released. The suspect remains hospitalized and is being treated for non-life threatening wounds. He is considered in custody at the hospital.

No other officers were injured, and the identity of the suspect has not been released.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the incident. Once that investigation is concluded, deputies will turn over the results to the Marathon County District Attorney, who will make a determination on what if any charges to bring.
