Fatal Accident in Sturgeon Bay Sunday Afternoon


There was a fatal car crash on Sturgeon Bay’s west side Sunday afternoon. The accident occurred at just before 2:40PM, in the 1300 block of Highway 42/57 on the southwest end of the city. A witness stated that the vehicle was traveling west, or southbound on the highway, when it drifted to the right, went over a curb, and struck a retention wall head-on.
A 44 year-old Manitowoc woman was the front seat passenger, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, a 38 year-old Sturgeon Bay man, and a 16 year-old female from Sturgeon Bay, were both listed as being in critical condition. Eagle III and Theda Care Emergency Heliport both aided in medical air transport to other medical facilities. Also assisting on scene were the Sturgeon Bay Police Department, Door County Sheriff’s Department, Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, Door County EMS, and, the Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team.
The right southbound lane of the highway in that area was closed for several hours while the incident was being investigated, leaving one lane open for southbound traffic. The highway was fully re-opened just after 8PM. No other information is available at this time, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
