Work is underway on the more than 110 year old south breakwater pier in Algoma. The fifteen million dollar project is being done by Roen Salvage Company of Sturgeon Bay. The work is essentially the demolition & repair of the entire south breakwater pier, which is 1,530 feet long. Barry Kuzay, Vice President & General Manager at Roen details some of the work…

Kuzay says there are several factors that will impact the length of this project, including fish spawning seasons, & of course winter. This year, the in water work needs to be complete by October 1st, at which point work will shift to the top side of the pier until the winter stoppage. Crews will return in the spring of 2025, but full completion of the project isn’t expected until spring of 2026. Kuzay also asks boaters in the area to remember to use caution around the work crews and to go slow in order to not throw a wake toward the barge or any of their crew…

Funding for the project comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law in November of 2021.
