An iconic view in the Village of Ephraim is the historically graffiti-covered Hardy Gallery building on Anderson Dock. About 4 years ago, village officials began to address the issue of that graffiti activity becoming out of hand as it spread beyond the building itself and onto the nearby concrete, rocks, light posts, signage, and trash cans. This last weekend, in keeping with their agreement with the village, the Hardy Gallery put a fresh coat of paint over the east facing exterior wall of the building, the side most visible from Water Street as you drive by. Village Administrator Brent Bristol explains that arrangement with the village…
That newly painted east-facing wall is already filling up with new graffiti, but Bristol says it is not filling up as quickly as the previous time an exterior wall was painted over…
Village officials want to remind everyone that tasteful and respectful graffiti is only permitted on the building’s siding and not on the doors, windows, signs, or plaques. Of course, all graffiti is strictly forbidden on the nearby concrete, rocks, light posts, signs, trash cans, or any other location which is not the building’s siding. Permitted graffiti may only be applied by a brush no larger than a ½ inch wide. The use of a paint roller is prohibited, as is spray paint, enamel paint, paint markers, or sharpies. Carving into the building’s siding is also forbidden.
