Last week there were multiple calls to the Door County Sheriff’s Office regarding a large pig running loose on or near Highway 42 south of Sturgeon Bay. The 300 pound animal was reportedly walking into traffic at times while at other times it was spotted walking or sitting in the ditch. For a few days the sheriff’s office asked for the community’s help in finding the pig’s owner, but no such information came forward. They made numerous attempts to even find the pig for safe capture, but they never actually came in contact with the elusive animal until Friday evening. Just after 6:40PM, a sheriff’s deputy did finally witness the pig near the highway. A statement from the sheriff’s office states that “because of its proximity to the highway, and the potential danger the large pig posed to motorists and others in the roadway, a the deputy then euthanized the animal.” The sheriff’s office is now reviewing reports, deputy and witness accounts, and body camera footage, and they will update the public with more information once more is learned.
Some area residents have shared their disappointment regarding the shooting of the pig as there was a group attempting to safely capture the animal alive so they could bring it to a sanctuary. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and we will report more on this story as more information is made available.
