Sturgeon Bay Boy on Scooter Struck by SUV

A Sturgeon Bay boy was struck by an SUV when he darted into the roadway on his scooter Wednesday afternoon. Just after 3:30PM, a 78 year-old Sturgeon Bay woman was northbound on 7th Avenue in her Ford Escape SUV, approaching the intersection with Kentucky Street. A witness later told the responding officer that he saw the boy and his electric scooter eastbound on the Kentucky Street sidewalk. He was moving quickly and did not attempt to stop or look for cars before proceeding to cross 7th Avenue. The Sturgeon Bay woman driving the SUV said she couldn’t even apply the brakes before her vehicle struck the boy. The witness also stated that the woman had no time to stop.
That area of 7th Avenue was closed off for 30 minutes while responders tended to the incident. The Sturgeon Bay boy received EMS ground transport to the Door County Medical Center with suspected serious injury. No citations were given and the responding officer noted that the SUV driver did not violate any traffic laws.
