Residents in the Southern Door School District were recently asked to complete a community survey regarding a possible referendum question for the April 1st election ballot. The district has now released a statement saying they will not proceed with a referendum question on that ballot. They have decided this is not the appropriate time to pursue voter approval for exceeding the state-set revenue limits.
Residents were asked for feedback about potentially exceeding the revenue limit by $2.5 million for the 2025-2026 school year and $3.5 million for the 3 subsequent years. Survey results showed only 31% of non-staff or non-parent respondents indicated a “Yes” or a “Probably Yes” to that proposal. Survey results also indicate that residents would like transparent communication, a careful evaluation of financial conditions, and more engagement with the community to build trust and help provide representation.
The Southern Door community has previously supported the district’s operating referendum set to expire in June of 2026. An operational referendum will then likely be placed on Southern Door ballots in April of 2026.
