Celebrating 70 years of business
Legacy is not something Lincoln Contractors Supply (LCS) simply reflects on. It is something Wisconsin has experienced for 70 years. Since 1956, LCS has been a driving force behind the state’s construction progress, supporting the contractors who shape communities across Wisconsin. Founded by lifelong friends Al Knief and Bill Guenther in West Allis, their small shop on Lincoln Avenue became the foundation for a multigenerational story that continues to influence the industry today.
From the start, LCS represented more than the equipment and supplies on shelves. It was a reliable partner for contractors who needed expertise, honesty, and support they could count on. This commitment to service carried into the early 1980s when leadership transitioned to the founders’ sons, Norm Knief and Dale Guenther. Under their guidance, the company expanded across Wisconsin and strengthened key relationships with manufacturers. Their leadership style was defined by early mornings, genuine care for employees, and a belief that every customer interaction mattered.
The company grew with 11 locations, 24-hour emergency support, and quickly became one of Wisconsin’s largest selections of contractor tools, rentals, and jobsite services. Even with this growth, the company never lost its connection to the values that built it. It remained rooted in personal service, local relationships, and a commitment to doing whatever it takes to support the people who build our state.
Today, that legacy continues through third generation president Aaron Knief, who assumed leadership in 2017. Aaron blends the values he grew up with and a modern, collaborative approach to running the business. He has strengthened partnerships with major industry manufacturers including Husqvarna, Wacker Neuson, and Multiquip, helping ensure contractors have access to- the latest tools and technologies that drive efficiency and productivity.
Our strategic alliance with Fabick Rents the Cat Rental Store in 2001 reshaped how the industry approached rental solutions and equipment availability. It also marked one of our largest periods of growth and expanded our reach from Racine to Eau Claire.
Even with its statewide influence, LCS remains deeply personal. Employees describe a culture where leaders are present, approachable, and committed to supporting their teams. Branches are empowered to give back locally, reinforcing the company’s belief that community impact matters as much as business success.
Three generations later, LCS stands as a Wisconsin institution built on faith, family, and integrity. As the fourth generation begins to show interest, the legacy that started in 1956 continues to grow brighter.
