The Door County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement concerning last Friday evening’s shooting of a loose 300-pound pig by a sheriff’s deputy near the highway south of Sturgeon Bay. The sheriff’s office has concluded its review of the incident, and the statement says there has been much misinformation circulating on social media regarding the shooting of the pig. You can now view the body-worn camera videos, squad camera videos, and the calls related to the incident on the Door County Sheriff’s Office Youtube channel.
Based on all of the information available, the department’s review of the situation says that the deputy’s actions were “within policy and justified based on the totality of the situation.” Some factors contributing to this review include the possible danger a large loose pig posed to motorists, the time of day, the number of times it previously entered the path of traffic on multiple highways, and the previous unsuccessful attempts of multiple individuals to secure the pig.
The statement also mentions how there has been a large number of threats to sheriff’s office staff and their family’s safety, and that such behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
