Eleven Rescued on Ice Friday Afternoon

There was an ice rescue performed Friday afternoon on Sand Bay in the Town of Nasewaupee. At 1:30PM, Nasewaupee Fire & Rescue responded to the Snake Island area along with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Wisconsin D.N.R., and the Door County Sheriff’s office. There were 11 ice fisherman who were stranded on a large section of ice which had separated. It was about 30 feet away from the shore ice, and with the strong winds it was continuing to float away. Rescue operations with an air boat reached the stranded fishermen. They were fishing guide customers who initially refused being rescued because they were led to believe they would be required to pay a large fee. Once they were informed there is no charge to be rescued, they boarded the Coast Guard rescue boat and were brought to shore.

Nasewaupee Fire & Rescue wants to remind everyone that despite the recent cold temperatures, ice conditions are always changing. Between the ice breaking operations, strong currents, and strong winds, the ice conditions can vary from location to location, day to day. Remember that no ice is 100% safe, and be cautious of where you venture out on the ice. Also, remember that rescue personnel are always available if needed.
