Garage Fire Thursday Evening in Southern Door County

A call came in for yet another structure fire in southern Door County early Thursday evening. Just before 4:30PM, the call came from a home on South Lake Michigan Drive, halfway between Vignes Road and Saloma Road, reporting a nearby detached garage shop was engulfed in flames. Southern Door Fire Chief Rich Olson reports that they had mutual aid from the fire departments of Sturgeon Bay, Brussels-Union-Gardner, Nasewaupee, Algoma, and Casco, with a total of 17 trucks and 40 firefighters on scene. He also added how the winter snowstorm and the property’s remote location made the response more difficult…

Firefighters used a total of approximately 60,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. There were no occupants in the shop, but the homeowner was in the house 100 feet away. There was also a barn about 50 feet away from the burning shop, and the firefighters did a good job of containing the fire to the shop. As for the cause of the fire, that remains undetermined, but Fire Chief Olson says the cause is not suspicious in nature…

There were no injuries in the response. Firefighters had the fire out by 8:30PM and were all able to clear the scene by 9:30PM.
