Yaskawa America, a manufacturer of AC inverter drives and motion control and robotics automation systems, has completed its final property purchase to assemble the site which will house its new North American headquarters in Franklin.
The purchase of the vacant building at 9640 S. Oakwood Park Dr. in the Franklin Business Park marks the company’s last in a series of property acquisitions at its pending headquarters campus.
The campus site currently includes two vacant lots and three buildings: one occupied by Yaskawa at 2 World Packaging Circle, one occupied by Sussex-based Quad at 1 World Packaging Circle, and another at 9640 S. Oakwood Park Dr., formerly home to Precision Color Graphics. This month, Yaskawa also acquired the two vacant lots for more than $20 million each in addition to the vacant building, which it purchased for $3.1 million. The three sales total over $43 million, according to state records.
In 2023, the company also bought the former Transpak Corp. building and the building now occupied by Quad.
Mike KnapekPlans for its new Franklin headquarters, which the company announced in June this year, include 800,000- to 900,000 square feet of additional buildings planned including a corporate headquarters, training, and lab building; manufacturing and packaging facilities; and robotics and semiconductor production operations. All facilities will exist among seven buildings on the site, according to remarks from Mike Knapek, chairman and CEO of Yaskawa America.
Due to “some business reasons and tax benefits,” Yaskawa will begin construction on the manufacturing side of things first, Knapek said.
Its Franklin headquarters campus will create 700 new jobs and will eventually house over 1,000 employees. The company will invest $180 million into the project.
Yaskawa is allowing Quad to reside in the building at 1 World Packaging Circle until the end of its lease in 2033, extending the project’s timeline to eight to 10 years.
“We’re a little dependent on their timing there, but we’ve got good communication,” Knapek said.
Yaskawa America is a subsidiary of Japan-based Yaskawa Electric Corp.
