Two Wisconsin universities are set to receive a combined $3 million in state support to expand health sciences education and help address growing health care workforce shortages across the state.
Gov. Tony Evers announced the funding last week as part of a broader package of infrastructure and community development projects approved through Wisconsin’s Non-State Grant Program and the State Building Commission.
Carroll University in Waukesha will receive $2 million to help complete its newly renovated College of Health Sciences building, which is currently under construction and expected to open in August ahead of the 2026-27 academic year.
Cindy GnadingerUniversity officials said the expanded facility will support growth in several health sciences programs, including Carroll’s Physician Assistant program, which receives hundreds of applications each year for just 30 available seats. The project will also expand space for the university’s Pathologists’ Assistant program and community-based clinics, including the Carroll University Rehabilitation Exercise clinic and Therapeutic Abilities Clinic, which provide clinical training opportunities for students while serving local residents.
“We are delighted to receive this support from the state of Wisconsin as we continue investing in exceptional health sciences education and community-based care,” Carroll president Cindy Gnadinger said in a press release.
Meanwhile, Mount Mary University in Milwaukee was selected to receive $1 million to expand its nursing program.
The funding will support expansion of the university’s Health Science Skills Laboratory, which uses advanced technology to train nursing and health care students. University leaders said the project is designed to help meet regional and statewide health care workforce needs.
“This award affirms the university’s commitment to preparing the next generation of compassionate, highly skilled nurses,” Mount Mary president Isabelle Cherney said in a press release.
