MSOE student launches aid platform for terminal illness diagnosees, families

Christian Gulak

A senior at Milwaukee School of Engineering has launched Kinnowcare, an online guide and planning tool for individuals and families navigating a terminal illness diagnosis.

After receiving news that his girlfriend’s father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer several weeks ago, founder Christian Gulak watched as logistical tasks mounted and overwhelmed the family.

“I looked into like what people currently have as resources after a diagnosis, and none of them (support) the gap of the first 30 days after it happens,” he said.

Thus, he created Kinnowcare, an online tool which provides a tasking checklist, financial guidance and a budgeting section for pending expenses including hospice, medications, caregiving and more.

“It tells you what to do, why it matters, who to call – with actual phone numbers and script – as well as a financial picture that you can keep track of and split across the family, so it doesn’t all fall on one person,” Gulak said.

The website is currently free to all users. Gulak plans to introduce a subscription model in the future, charging business users a monthly fee to provide the service as an employee benefit. That model could be introduced before the end of the year.

The business is self-funded thus far, but Gulak has applied for additional financing from Wisconsin-based startup accelerator gener8tor and others.

Gulak is still conducting interviews and collecting data to build out the platform. A beta version is available online and does not require login information as of now.
