BizTimes Milwaukee won four national journalism awards in this year’s annual Alliance of Area Business Publishers Editorial Excellence Awards competition. The awards were presented this week at the AABP’s annual summer conference, held this year in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The award entries are judged by faculty from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
BizTimes Milwaukee editor Andrew Weiland and managing editor Arthur Thomas took home three awards in this year’s competition.
In the Best Bylined Commentary category for medium-sized publications, Weiland won a gold award (first place). During 2025, Weiland’s commentaries sounded off on a variety of local business topics including: air pollution regulations, Milwaukee city government’s handling of development proposals, and opposition to a housing development in Milwaukee.
Judge’s comments: “Sharp writing forcefully argues a firm stance on each issue. The commentary is clear and addresses a range of problems facing the region in a succinct manner that offers valuable insight for its audience.”
Here is a list, with links, of all of the commentary articles written by Weiland in 2025:
This was the second year in a row that Weiland won a gold award in the Best Bylined Commentary category for medium-sized publications. In 2017, he won a silver award in the category.
Weiland also received a silver award this year in the Best Editorial category for medium-sized publications for his editorial Developing, attracting and retaining talent is crucial to our future, which appeared in the Sept. 8, 2025, edition of BizTimes Milwaukee, known as the Talent Issue.
Judge’s comments: “This editorial takes on not only the population growth in the state but also quality of life
issues in Wisconsin. Several issues are addressed at once under the umbrella of future talent.”

In the Best Beat Reporting, Economics and Finance category for medium-sized publications, Thomas won a silver award (second place). His coverage of the beat in 2025 included:
Judge’s comments: “This reporter drew on a breadth of industry sources to cover a variety of banking issues, including a breaking-news bank acquisition, a broad economic overview and a second-order trend story downstream from economic turbulence of the day.”
This is the second time Thomas has won an AABP award for his coverage of the economics and finance beat. He won a gold award in 2024.
In addition, BizTimes Milwaukee won a bronze award (third place) in the Best Website category, which includes all publication sizes in the AABP.
Judge’s comments: “Editors excel at connecting readers to the publication’s rich journalism through
thoughtful presentation and evolving coverage. Strong visuals support the reporting, while a
photo-driven layout invites discovery.”
Founded in 1979, the AABP represents approximately 57 publications in North America and Australia.
Those weren’t the only awards won this year by BizTimes Milwaukee journalists. Earlier this month, BizTimes Milwaukee won seven awards in the Milwaukee Press Club’s annual Excellence in Journalism contest, the publication’s best showing ever in the competition.
